Data Size & Transfer Time Calculator
Estimate how long a download, upload or backup takes. Compare decimal and binary file units, bits versus bytes, connection efficiency and the speed needed to meet a deadline.
1. Describe your transfer
Efficiency of 85% means using 85% of the entered speed. Set 100% for the ideal lower bound. Copies add to the total size and are transferred sequentially.

kB/MB/GB use powers of 1,000; KiB/MiB/GiB use powers of 1,024. Decimal conversions round to six places (bytes use nine), labeling amounts below display precision. Size conversion uses integer fractions; time estimates use floating-point arithmetic. No files or network tests are needed. Website ads and analytics follow the privacy information.
Using Data Size & Transfer Time Calculator
Plan a transfer from its file size, connection speed and usable-speed percentage, with clear bits/bytes and decimal/binary units.
- Enter size per file and its unit, connection speed and its unit. Choose 1–1,000 sequential copies.
- Set efficiency from 1–100% and a positive target time. Results update automatically; use Calculate for an immediate refresh.
- Compare rates, inspect unit conversions and copy the estimate or download JSON/comparison CSV.
Example
1 GB at 100 Mbit/s and 100% efficiency takes 80 seconds. 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes, while 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. 100 Mbit/s equals 12.5 MB/s before overhead.
Questions & answers
Is this an internet speed test?
No. It calculates from the speed you enter. It does not contact a test server or measure your current connection.
Why distinguish Mbit/s from MB/s?
One byte contains eight bits. A 100 Mbit/s connection is ideally 12.5 MB/s. Choose the exact unit displayed by your connection plan or transfer app.
Why distinguish GB and GiB?
GB uses 1,000,000,000 bytes. GiB uses 1,073,741,824 bytes. Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000; binary prefixes use powers of 1,024.
What does efficiency mean?
It is a planning assumption for the usable fraction of the entered speed. 85% uses 85% of that speed. It is not a measured protocol overhead or a prediction about a particular service. 100% gives the ideal lower bound.
How are several copies handled?
Their sizes are added and the estimated transfers are sequential at the entered effective speed. This is not a model of simultaneous downloads competing for bandwidth.
What does speed needed for target mean?
It is the advertised rate required to transfer the total amount within the target duration at the same chosen efficiency. Real systems may still be limited by the server, storage or other factors.
How precise are the results?
Input accepts up to 12 whole digits and six decimal places without commas or exponents. Size arithmetic uses integer fractions; displayed conversions round to six decimals, or nine for bytes. Time estimates use floating-point arithmetic and round up to whole seconds when at least one second. Small times and rounded small conversions are labeled explicitly.
Can I enter zero?
Zero file size gives zero time. Connection speed and target duration must be greater than zero. Efficiency is 1–100% and copies are 1–1,000. Fractional bytes are flagged because actual file lengths use whole bytes.
Is data saved or uploaded?
Only numbers are needed. Calculation and report generation run locally without processing upload or saved history. Website ads and analytics follow the privacy information.
