PPM & PAM Image Conversion Workbench

Open portable pixmaps and alpha-preserving PAM images, preview them and convert between portable images, PNG, JPG and WebP locally.

Open & convert

PPM P3/P6, PAM RGB/RGBA/grayscale · up to 32 MiB. PNG/JPG/WebP up to 20 MiB. All inputs: 4 million pixels / 4,096 pixels per side. Single-image portable files only.

Open an image or try the example.

PPM and JPG flatten transparency onto the matte. PAM and PNG preserve decoded RGBA. Portable exports contain sRGB sample values, with no BT.709 gamma conversion. 16-bit inputs become 8-bit. Metadata and source profiles are not retained. PSD, PDN, BPG, FLIF and PIK are unsupported.

Using PPM & PAM Image Conversion Workbench

Convert portable RGB and RGBA image files with explicit transparency and precision controls.

  1. Open a PPM/PAM file or a PNG, JPG or WebP image.
  2. Review dimensions and source sample precision, then choose an output format and matte color.
  3. Download the conversion. Use PNG or PAM when transparency matters.

Example

Try the transparent example and export PAM; reopen it to verify its alpha.
Export PPM with a dark matte to flatten transparent artwork.

Questions & answers

Which portable formats are supported?

PPM P3 text and P6 binary, plus PAM P7 RGB, RGB_ALPHA, grayscale and grayscale-alpha tuples. Samples up to MAXVAL 65,535 are accepted and scaled to 8-bit. Multiple images in one file and arbitrary PAM tuples are unsupported.

Which formats preserve transparency?

PNG and RGBA PAM preserve decoded alpha. PPM and JPG flatten alpha onto the chosen matte. WebP supports transparency but uses lossy compression here.

Does this preserve 16-bit precision or color management?

No. Portable inputs scale to 8-bit RGBA. Samples are interpreted as direct RGB values; no BT.709/sRGB transfer conversion is applied. Exported PPM uses the common sRGB-sample variation. Profiles and metadata are not preserved.

Why is text PPM export limited?

Text PPM is much larger than binary PPM. It is limited to 250,000 pixels to keep memory use manageable; binary formats support up to 4 million pixels.

Are uncommon formats such as PSD supported?

No. PSD, PDN, BPG, FLIF and PIK require separate compatible decoders or encoders. They are not disguised as PNG or treated as supported by changing extensions.
