CSV Group & Summarize
Group spreadsheet rows by up to three columns, then count values or calculate sums, averages, minima and maxima. Keep IDs as literal text, inspect the grouped table and export your summary.
1. Load spreadsheet data
Load the source before grouping.
2. Choose grouping & calculation
Grouping is case-sensitive and preserves literal IDs such as 001. Blank group cells form a group. Numeric calculations accept signed plain decimals, not currency symbols, separators or scientific notation. Blank values are skipped; a group with no numeric values gets an empty result. A nonblank invalid number stops the summary with a row error.

3. Grouped results
Up to 100 groups appear in this scrollable preview; downloads include every group, up to 2,000. Sums and minima/maxima retain exact decimal values. Means round to six decimal places; JSON includes the exact numerator and denominator. CSV formula protection adds an apostrophe to risky leading characters, including negative numeric results; disable it only for trusted data when you need raw cells. JSON keeps original values.
Reuses the existing CSV parser and exact decimal helpers. Source limits: one million characters, 5,000 rows, 100 columns and 100,000 data cells. Numeric cells accept up to 100 characters. All job processing runs in a cancelable browser worker. Source edits require reload; setting edits clear old exports. No processing upload or saved table history. Using CSV Group & Summarize
Summarize repeated categories or identifiers with one grouped calculation at a time, using exact decimal arithmetic.
- Paste CSV/TSV or open a UTF-8 file, choose delimiter/header handling and load the source.
- Choose 1–3 distinct grouping columns, a calculation, value column and result order. Build the summary.
- Review results and warnings. Copy CSV or download all groups as CSV/JSON; use the linked CSV Editor to clean source data.
Example
Books values 12.50, 8.75, −2.50 and blank sum to 18.75. Mean uses the three numeric values and is 6.25. Grouping by Category and Region separates Books/North from Books/South. Literal ID 001 remains distinct from 1.
Questions & answers
Which calculations are supported?
Row count, nonblank value count, sum, mean, minimum and maximum. One summary calculation is generated at a time, grouped by 1–3 distinct source columns.
Are leading-zero IDs preserved?
Yes. Grouping uses literal case-sensitive strings, so 001 and 1 form different groups. Trimming grouping values is optional. Blank grouping cells form a group.
What numbers can I use?
Plain signed decimals up to 100 characters, such as 12.50 or -2.5. Currency symbols, separators and exponents are rejected for numeric calculations. Nonblank count accepts arbitrary text.
How are blank values handled?
Blank/whitespace-only value cells are skipped by numeric calculations and nonblank count. Row count includes every source row in the group. A group without numeric values gets an empty numeric result, rather than a misleading zero.
How precise are aggregates?
Sums and extrema retain exact decimal values. Means round to six decimals. Ranking uses exact fractions before display rounding; JSON includes the result numerator/denominator and exact sum.
Can I combine different units or currencies?
The tool does not infer units, dates, currency conversion or density. Clean and standardize values first, or include unit/currency columns in your grouping so incompatible quantities remain separate.
What are the limits?
One million source characters, 5,000 data rows, 100 columns and 100,000 cells, using the existing parser limits. At most 2,000 groups. Preview shows the first 100; exports include all groups.
Why does protected CSV change some cells?
Spreadsheet formula protection prefixes risky leading characters with an apostrophe, including negative numeric results. The page reports the number of protected cells. For trusted data you may disable protection when raw cells are needed; JSON keeps original values.
Does it support an interactive pivot grid?
This tool creates a flat grouped summary with one calculation and up to three grouping columns. It does not build a cross-tabulated pivot grid or edit source cells. Use CSV Editor for editing.
Are files uploaded?
Parsing and summarization run in a cancelable local browser worker without processing uploads or saved history. Source edits require reloading and setting edits clear old exports. Website ads and analytics follow the privacy information.
